UK Human rights and Freedom extinguished

February 18, 2007

Hi Grit

The government in the UK, if re-elected at the next election, will be taking the final steps to abolish human rights, freedom and privacy for the individual UK citizen, all in the name of protecting us against terrorism.

If the labour government have their way, all adults over the age of 16 will, by 2009, be required to place their fingerprints on a central computer. The suggested law may even extend to “iris” prints. These moves are in addition to the requirement to provide photographs for driving licences; requirement to provide details for the census and annual local government property occupancy register (for council tax purposes); and the multitude of close-circuit television cameras that adorn our towns, streets, villages and roads. An extra measure of identity that is also being considered is to place our medical records in the same “identikit” of us.

Not satisfied with us already being the most watched nation in the EU, these latest moves will actually increase the gap between us and other countries, turning us into one of the most monitored nations in the world. Some may argue that these moves are positive, but are they? Let us consider the evidence.

1) COST:

Naturally, there is the cost of the citizen ID rules. The government suggest that this will amount to just over £5.4 billion ($10.8 billion). However, independent sources put the figure at £19.3 billion ($38.6 billion). This represents over £300 ($600) per annum, per citizen. In addition to this, it is compulsory for people to give this information at one of 69 centres through the UK, at their own cost. In some cases this means travelling up to 100 miles, irrespective of age, financial situation or infirmity. A round trip of this nature, taken in work time will cost the worst affected another £100 at least. Of course, this does not take into account the annual running costs of the scheme.

2) PRIVACY

A basic human right is that of privacy. The ability to live our lives without fear or favour, and to keep parts of our lives free from the prying eyes of others. From 2009, if these plans go ahead, this will no longer be possible. Some will argue that if you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear, but that is not the point. Do I really want my health, age, medical condition, financial status and life history potentially exposed to every form of media and individual nationally and internationally? Our data protection act suggests that such information should be secure but, in view of the fact that the government has incorporated rules to allow certain organisations, commercial as well as government and non-government organisations to access the data, this guarantee no longer holds true.

3) DISCRIMINATION

Such a system will also lead to discrimination, both intentional and by devious means. Employers will be tempted to access medical and financial information about potential employees, therefore leading to unfair bias against certain applicants. This is particularly the case in medical issues. For example, take the case of a person who may in the past have had cancer. Although possibly totally cured, when such a person is set against an applicant who has not past health problems, which is the less than totally honest employer going to chose?

Medical, legal and financial practitioners will be able to access medical records, providing a situation where they can discriminate against those they do not want to assist.

4) MISCARRIAGE OF JUSTICE:

No computer or other registration system is infalible and the identity system will be no exception. With personal and biometric information on around fifty million people on file, the incidences of misinterpretation, incorrect identification and transpostion of information will rise. As a result this is bound to lead to an increase in the incidence of miscarriages of Justice. Add to this the fact that none of the biometric identity measures are 100% accurate and it can be seen that this will compound the issue. A small example of this might occur with twins for example. Especially in cases of identical twins wrong identification is even more likely.

5) THE CONCEPT OF INNOCENCE

The United Kingdom laws have always been founded upon the rule of “innocent until proven guilty.” It is bad enough that in recent decades tax and other laws have led to a reverse of this process in such areas. Now, with the introduction of of these measures, such a foundation has been totally eroded. The onus on the citizen will now be to prove their innocence in all cases.

Does this mean that in future one has to keep a daily diary of life events to ensure that one cannot get into a situation where lack of evidence to suggest otherwise leads to automatic guilt? I work from home and, during the day, this means that there is no-one to provide an alibi for my whereabouts, especially if I am not on the computer. If I take two hours off for a bath and rest, will I in future have to log this and provide photographic evidence?

6) IDENTITY THEFT

Identity theft is one of the fastest growing crimes of the past decade. It is also one of the least obvious to the victim, unless it has been committed for financial purposes. How can we be sure that our identity will not be stolen or duplicated for other criminal purposes? What is more important is, if such an event does occur, how will we know until a crime, using our identity has been committed?

7) PROTECTION AGAINST CRIME AND TERRORISM

The assumption that identity laws will offer protection against crime and terrorism is flawed in so many ways as to make it laughable. It only works if one starts from the premise that every hardened criminal and committed terrorist is going to abide by these laws. Naturally, Osama Bin Laden and other terrorists, and underworld criminals are going to assist the law by coming forward voluntarily to offer their biometric identity to the authorities. I think not! Such an assumption is, at best, insane.

There are those who argue that it is easier to catch someone who does not possess an identity card. How does that work? There are 60 million people in the UK and it is certain that there are not enough law enforcement agencies or officers to check each indicvidual. Add to this the fact that there is unencumbered travel in the EU through 25 countries and a determined criminal or terrorist has more than adequate escape routes. These are in addition to the many illegal ways of escaping from the country. Furthermore, why should such persons worry about being apprehended when there is always the route of identity theft to cover their tracks?

Although there may be rules and laws in place to address breaches of the protections in place, these are an “after the event” remedy, by which time the damage is done. Once the security of information has been broken, one cannot recapture the privacy, irrespective of how much money has been recovered in damages.

The hypothesis that these measures are a protection against crime and terrorism, as has been clearly demonstrated, is totally wrong. They will have little to no effect in these areas.

In conclusion therefore, one has to observe that these new laws will have limited impact upon detering any major crime and terrorism attempts. What they will do is to damage the human rights of the innocent citizen.

Polish invasion of England complete

February 16, 2007

Help, I need an exit boat! You will recall from past posts Grit that England is experiencing high levels of immigration, particularly from the former eastern European states. It appears from an article in one of today’s newspapers, that it has now become a total takeover. A local council in the Midlands has been surrendered to the Polish people and no doubt other areas of the country will quickly follow.

You may wonder what is causing me such concern. The answer can be found here. The council in question has put up local diversion signs – in Polish. Despite the fact that it is rumoured that the local Polish population is only 6%, there is obviously something the council officers know that we don’t. Similarly, although officers at central government state the signs are illegal, is this just a ploy to lull us into a false sense of security?

I will be watching developments.

Bat out of hell, bite me world!

January 29, 2007

Hi Brit,

I was in a bit of a nostalgic mood this afternoon, so I put “Bat Out of Hell” on and cranked it up.  Man, what perfect timing!  Global Warming, extremest Muslim terrorists, liberals, Jane Fonda, Britney’s beaver, Big Brother racism, Hillary Clinton, the United Nations, President Bush, AlGore, Iraq, Iran, nuclear bombs, blood in the streets, and the end of the world; screw it all!  So, take a few minutes, put the CD on, crank it up and sing along!

Bat Out Of Hell lyrics

The sirens are screaming and the fires are howling

Way down in the valley tonight
There’s a man in the shadows with a gun in his eye
And a blade shining oh so bright
There’s evil in the air and there’s thunder in the sky
And a killer’s on the bloodshot streets
And down in the tunnel where the deadly are rising
Oh I swear I saw a young boy
Down in the gutter
He was starting to foam in the heat
Oh Baby you’re the only thing in this whole world
that’s pure and good and right
And wherever you are and wherever you go
There’s always gonna be some light
But i gotta get out
I gotta break it out now
Before the final crack of dawn
So we gotta make the most of our one night together
When it’s over you know
We’ll both be so alone
Like a bat out of hell
I’ll be gone when the morning comes
When the night is over
Like a bat out of hell I’ll be gone gone gone
Like a bat out of hell I’ll be gone when the morning comes
But when the day is done
And the sun goes down
And the moonlight’s shining through

Then like a sinner before the gates of heaven

I’ll come crawling on back to you
I’m gonna hit the highway like a battering ram

On a silver black phantom bike

When the metal is hot and the engine is hungry

And we’re all about to see the light

Nothing ever grows in this rotten old hole

Everything is stunted and lost

And nothing really rocks

And nothing really rolls

And nothing’s ever worth the cost

And I know that I’m damned if I never get out

And maybe I’m damned if I do

But with every other beat I got left in my heart

You know I’d rather be damned with you

If I gotta be damned you know I wanna be damned

Dancing through the night with you

If I gotta be damned you know I wanna be damned

Gotta be damned you know I wanna be damned

If Gotta be damned you know I wanna be damned

Dancing through the night

Dancing through the night

Dancing through the night with you
Oh Baby you’re the only thing in this whole world

that’s pure and good and right

And wherever you are and wherever you go

There’s always gonna be some light

But I gotta get out

I gotta break it out now

Before the final crack of dawn

So we gotta make the most of our one night together

When it’s over you know

We’ll both be so alone

Like a bat out of hell

I’ll be gone when the morning comes

When the night is over

Like a bat out of hell I’ll be gone gone gone

Like a bat out of hell I’ll be gone when the morning comes

But when the day is done

And the sun goes down

And the moonlight’s shining through

Then like a sinner before the gates of heaven

I’ll come crawling on back to you

Then like a sinner before the gates of heaven

I’ll come crawling on back to you

I can see myself tearing up the road

Faster than any other boy has ever gone

And my skin is raw but my soul is ripe

And no one’s gonna stop me now

I gotta make my escape

But I can’t stop thinking of you

And I never see the sudden curve until it’s way too late

I never see the sudden curve till it’s way too late

Then I’m dying on the bottom of a pit in the blazing sun

Torn and twisted at the foot of a burning bike

And I think somebody somewhere is tolling a bell

And the last thing I see is my heart

Still beating

Breaking out of my body

And flying away

Like a bat out of hell

Then I’m dying at the bottom of a pit in the blazing sun

Torn and twisted at the foot of a burning bike

And I think somebody somewhere must be tolling a bell

And the last thing I see is my heart

Still beating

Still beating

Breaking out of my body and flying away

Like a bat out of hell

Thanks Jim; thanks Meat!  Still love it; still a fan.

The liberal media ain’t real bright

January 26, 2007

Hi Brit,

While we all suspect, or so I suspect, that the liberal media aren’t running on all cylinders, I stumbled across a news item that illustrates it nicely,

Ted Nugent denies immigrant reference.

Now, for those of you who are not familiar with Ted Nugent, not only is he one of the best guitarists in the world, but he is a fanatic hunter with bow, firearms, and, I suspect, his bare hands.  I’ve heard rumors that he is tough enough to chase his prey down on foot, kill it in any one of several bloody ways, and eat it raw.  He is also known to be a straight forward, outspoken, and direct type, who has absolutely no hesitation to tell you exactly what he thinks.  So, to pick a fight with this killing machine, a man who could easily slaughter most people and compose a great new musical work while doing it, knowing that he is rich enough to get off with at least one murder, to me, is definite proof of stupidity.

 Rock on Ted!

LA Latinos Shaken, But Not By Quake

January 26, 2007

Hi Brit,

According to this story, California Latinos fearful after immigration raids, ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) finally seems to be doing its job.  Of course, the liberal press, represented this time by Tim Gaynor, who wrote the piece, are taking the side of the poor scared law breaking criminal illegal aliens.  I say they should be scared, all criminals should!  Get out of my country and take Tim Gaynor with you!

Oh, and not only is ICE doing a better job, they’re also getting more creative in naming their operations.  The one in the article that has the liberals all upset was called, “Operation Return to Sender.”   Assuming that the Feds didn’t waste money hiring a consultant to come up with that, I offer my admiration and congratulations.

The race for ’08 starting a bit early.

January 21, 2007

Hi Brit,

Since the campaign to be President in 2008 is starting a bit early, like a year early, we may as well start keeping track of the players.  Considering more Democrats have thrown their pleas for contributions into the ring, let’s start with them.

Barack Obama, man of mystery and little experience (7 years as a state senator and less than one term as US Senator) who’s early years are carefully left mentioned by the liberal press.  The candidate has been cautious about discussing anything of importance, including his stand on political issues.  We do know, however, that he is a fan of the Bears (American football team) and that there is a minor scandal, Barackwater, that may haunt him later.  Considering the trend in US political races toward massive amounts of negative campaign ads, Barack’s lack of history may be a valuable thing.  Oh, and you’re going to hear his middle name a lot, that being Hussein, as in Saddam Hussein.

Hillary Clinton.  Whitewater.  Socialized medicine.  Dead lawyer.  Monica.  Bill.  Scandal, scandal, scandal, and they’re all going to come back.  Besides, almost as many people hate her as hate Bush.  Still, she’s evil and conniving enough to have a shot at the Big Prize.  Plus, she’s got that selling her soul to the Devil thing going.

Bill Richardson.  Currently Governor of New Mexico, which is appropriate since he’s Hispanic, whatever the heck that means.  Of course, Mexicans are also said to be Hispanic, and, given our insane illegal immigration problem, this isn’t going to be a check in his plus column.  He also carries a good deal of baggage from his days as President Clinton’s minion.  Good luck Bill, because that’s the only chance you have.

Dennis Kucinich, who cares?  Sorry, I really don’t know much about Dennis, except that he is a US Representative, he’s run for President before, he’s short, and he’s so funny looking that I can never hear what he says because I’m laughing so hard.  If he does a lot of radio spots, who knows, the Hobbit vote may propel him to single digits in the primary.

That should be more than enough to get us started.

Once again Media bias rears its ugly head

January 15, 2007

Hi Brit,

I don’t know enough, yet, about England to know if your news media is biased, but I have proof that ours is, U.S. Border Patrol agent shoots dead Mexican migrant.  From the head line one would, obviously, think that this was some poor Mexican tourist gunned down at a boarder crossing by an evil Border Patrol agent.  However, the reality is that the deader was illegally crossing into our country, was stooped by a Government official, resisted arrest, and was shot.  Of course, the liberal reporter goes on to include the Mexican point of view, like that matters, and gives a hard luck story to justify the criminal’s actions.  Cry me a river.  Personally, I’m sick of our Government’s lack of resolve to defend our boarders, just as much as I’m sick of our liberal media that sides with our enemies.

The gift that keeps on giving.

January 8, 2007

Hi Brit,

I just thought I’d take a moment to thank Mexico for the present of so many of their fine citizens, Some immigrants are re-arrested 6 times.  What would our law enforcement agencies, private security firms, and burglar alarm industries do with out you?

Now a question to the Most Powerful Woman in the World (as Nanny Pelosi thinks of herself,) what are you going to do about this?  Allow me to suggest not releasing these criminals inside the United States.  Allow me to further suggest returning them to Mexico using a giant catapult, which, perhaps, would deter repeated illegal entry into our country.

Stallone punch drunk on illegal immigration!

January 5, 2007

Hi Brit,

It never ceases to amaze me as to how stupid celebrities can be on social issues.  Here’s a great example, Stallone Attacks Mexican Border Fence, where the aging action hero shows off just how badly his brain has been damaged by filming 500 Rocky movies.  While desperately trying to land a jab on the US Government’s plans to build a fence to keep out illegals from Mexico, Stallone unleashed this bit of brilliance, “I support Mexicans who work in my country.”  Considering the lavish, and fenced in, home Sylvester maintains from which lofty perch to look down on us little people, I have no doubt that a horde of illegals are in his employee.  Of course, one should note, that Mr. Stallone has his own fence around his mansion:Beverly Hills Photo Album
Sylvester Stallone House

Obviously, just another example of rich liberals thinking, if I can use the term loosely, that their vision of what’s good for us common folk isn’t their cup of tea.  Bite me you aging twit!  It’s a shame that a rich jerk like you can’t pay a few dollars more to hire American labor to maintain your lavish life style.  For that matter, SS (and I make that abbreviation on purpose for its WWII connotation) if you’re so concerned about the poor, why haven’t you donated most of your considerable wealth to them?  The same goes for the rest of you rich liberal assholes.  It’s easy to roll down the window of your limousine and talk a good game to the fawning reporters, but none of you idiots have the stones to put your fabulous fortunes where your surgically improved mouthes are!  Well, I say you can pucker up your pampered lips and kiss my working class ass!

Sorry Brit, sometimes the temptation to rant is just too great.

Jobs Americans won’t do?

December 21, 2006

Hi Brit,

As with most developed countries, we have a problem with immigration.  In our case, the trouble is with people moving here illegally.  One of the debating points on why we shouldn’t stop this rests on the claim that these people do jobs that Americans won’t take.  It would seem that this isn’t true.

Loss for one is another’s gain

This tends to indicate that some other motive must be involved on the part of those who don’t want to stop the flood of party crashers pouring over our southern boarder.  Could that motive be all the Social Security tax these people pay, but can never collect?
