Ashes to Ashes – Cricket

cricket.JPGHi Grit

I am not a sports fan and I certainly cannot understand why 22 men from England and Australia get so excited about winning a two and a half inch urn filled with ashes (must have been a small person!).

However, as England have lost this trophy, based on the best of five tests, without even playing the last two matches, I do wonder why we in the UK seem to have this also-ran (no pun intended) attitude to sport. In the four main sports of this country our record is not that brilliant. Rugby is the only one we are currently having success with. In this we are WORLD CHAMPIONS.

However, this is not the case with others. Football – it is forty years since we won the world cup.  Tennis – the last time someone from the UK won the championship (ladies) was thirty years ago, and Cricket – well we occasionally win the ashes, but sometimes it seems as if the Australians just feel sorry for us and let this happen.

It appears to me that we just are too polite. Our sporting hero’s seem to be taking the motto of “it’s not the winning, it’s the taking part” too literally. I just wonder whether I will see another UK sporting success in my lifetime?

english rugy is in dire conditions. they are loosing to everyone (i mean everyone).

and you are correct about everything esle.. apart from the fact that england dont win the ashes every now and then. they won them 18 months ago for the 1st time in 18 years. and then go and loose them, probably for another 18 years.

also please someone explain to me why the cricket ream is called england when there are players from wales, south africa, asia all playing for this so called ‘england’….
