Global warming?

Hi Brit,

You’ve hit on my problem with believing in global warming.  All we get from the news media is “so many scientists say it’s true.”  Why no details?  Why no explanation?  Why not even a definition?  What I’ve seen so far wouldn’t convince anyone not willing to take it on faith.  Of course, over here we’re a trusting lot.

If you haven’t been able to find explanations or evidence, you haven’t been looking very hard.

In the case currently pending in the U.S. supreme court (Commonwealth of Massachussetts et al. vs US EPA et al.), a number of prominent climate scientists have filed an amicus curiae (“friend of the court”) brief in order to provide background information. This is a good place to start.

You can also go to the web site of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), and download the “Third Assessment Report” (TAR). Lots of information there.

You can also read the weblog RealClimate. Climate science from climate scientists.

Climate science is not trivial or easy. Please take the time and expend the effort necessary to digest information thoroughly.

    Hi tamino,

Sorry your comment didn’t go straight on. It must have been all the links (which I will check out ASAP.)

However, I have done a bit of investigating on the subject, and much of the evidence is disputed or conflicting. There are questions as to the reliability of the historic data, various warming and cooling cycles prior to any influence by human activity, satellite observations that don’t correspond to ground measurements, and so on.

Thus, I must agree with you that climate science is not easy. I also feel that taking any action, beyond further study, based on our limited understanding of this field is misguided at best, and very dangerous at worst. After all, not that long ago some of the same scientists were warning of an impending ice age. We should take a cautious approach and filter the politics out of the debate.

By the way, what got us started on this subject was a request by a friend for our opinions. I’ll point her to your site so she can get a well rounded view.

    Thanks for the input,
    the Grit
